Astronomers have spent decades searching the universe for signs of alien life without success. However, a new paper published in Nature Astronomy suggests that extraterrestrials could be out there, but evidence has been missed, ignored, or misinterpreted due to a problem known as 'false negatives'.

Lead author Professor Inge Loes ten Kate, an astrobiologist from Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam, told the Daily Mail that scientists often overlook evidence when their equipment is inadequate or when they are unprepared to consider life's existence.

"We miss it or misinterpret it because we think it is 'just a mineral' or 'just a gas in the atmosphere that is not produced by life'," Professor ten Kate explained.

The Risks of Overlooking False Negatives

Historically, astrobiology has focused more on avoiding 'false positives'—erroneously declaring the discovery of life too early. False positives carry major risks, including undermining public trust in science and threatening funding for future research. However, prioritizing false positives has led to major shortcomings, as ruling out life on a planet too early can cause scientists to miss critical evidence or lose equipment funding.

Even on Earth, assumptions have led researchers to miss viable habitats, such as photosynthetic microorganisms beneath rocks in Antarctica's Dry Valleys. Current methods used to study distant exoplanets would likely miss these subterranean organisms and deep ocean vent ecosystems. Furthermore, researchers point out there is no reason to assume alien life would rapidly colonize a planet to produce massive observable atmospheric changes.

Re-evaluating Evidence on Mars

Professor ten Kate highlighted two specific cases on Mars that should be reinvestigated as potential false negatives:

  • The 1976 NASA Viking Biology Experiment: Initial tests concluded Martian soil lacked biological molecules. Scientists now know the rudimentary tests were compromised by perchlorate, a salt compound in the soil unknown to researchers at the time.
  • Perseverance Rover's Mineral Discoveries: The rover recently found 'leopard spots' and 'poppy seeds'—iron-bearing mineral rings that are typically produced by biological activity on Earth.

Although NASA's slashed science budget makes the long-promised Sample Return Mission unlikely, Professor ten Kate emphasized that analyzing these samples in terrestrial laboratories could yield clear answers about life on Mars.
